JOB DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Chief Development Officer, the Senior Associate Director of Major Gifts and Planned Giving is responsible for developing and implementing strategies to identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward donors for major and planned gifts to advance Winterthur’s mission. This position will play a vital role in securing philanthropic support for Winterthur initiatives through regular interaction with current and prospective donors, with a specific focus on the major gifts level ($25,000+), including planned gifts. In addition, this position will manage strategy to secure planned gifts to support long-term financial sustainability and re-launch Winterthur’s Port Royal Society, its planned giving donor recognition society. The ideal candidate is a proactive and enthusiastic self-starter who is capable of building sustainable, long-term philanthropic relationships while meeting fundraising goals and independently prioritizing responsibilities.

Compensation: $90,000

Work Schedule: Monday – Friday, 35 hours/week

Responsibilities:

1. Develop solicitation strategies for a portfolio of 75+ prospects and current donors to secure major gifts for specifically designated areas of the institution and for the Port Royal Society.
2. Develop and implement strategies to identify and engage prospects who will expand the donor base and establish and strengthen relationships with existing donors.
3. Generate new leads and qualify gift prospects and planned gift prospects from research, prospect tracking tools, and donor base.
4. Provide guidance to donors and their advisors on the various planned giving vehicles, such as bequests, charitable gift annuities, trusts, appreciated assets, and other estate planning tools.
5. Meet fundraising metrics as assigned, including goals for prospect visits, solicitations submitted, gifts secured, while managing prospect tracking and correspondence. Regularly communicate progress toward these goals.
6. Personally cultivate and solicit gifts and actively communicate with prospects via writing, phone, and in person visits.
7. Plan strategic engagement, cultivation, and stewardship activities for Port Royal Society.
8. Develop compelling fundraising collateral material in collaboration with Marketing.
   Create customized proposals, reports, acknowledgements, and other related communications.
9. Participate in select programs, events, and donor meetings as needed which may require travel.
10. Performs other duties as requested.

Minimum Experience: Bachelor of Arts, commensurate experience accepted in lieu of education, with 5+ years of experience working in a membership, development or alumni office

Preferred Experience: In addition to minimum experience requirements, experience with individual fundraising; knowledge of Winterthur’s collection and estate; knowledge of DE, PA, MD, NJ region; knowledge of local philanthropic landscape

Knowledge/Skills:

1. Demonstrated passion and commitment to Winterthur.
2. Proven ability to identify and build strong external relationships with a variety of donors, volunteers and other stakeholders; Must demonstrate friendliness, professionalism, and a donor-centric approach.
3. Track record of success in meeting fundraising goals and demonstrated record of securing major gifts from individuals
4. High level of familiarity with and comfort discussing various planned giving vehicles.
5. Proficient skills in Microsoft Office, Tessitura or comparable CRM, and project management software
6. Strong written, communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
7. Ability to manage multiple tasks and to prioritize.
8. Ability to handle confidential or financial information with discretion.
9. Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional evening and weekends, and occasional travel, is required.

Essential Functions:

1. Valid driver’s license and ability to pass a defensive driving course
2. Engage in conversation with members, donors, and Board of Trustees
3. Pass golf cart training for use with donors
4. Ability to work at a computer for up to 8 hours a day
